This graphite study embodies one of two alternative compositional arrangements explored during the design phase of a recently commissioned painting of St. Maria Goretti. The implement bisecting the halo is an iron ice pick, the instrument of her martyrdom, and the Latin text, taken from the Vespers antiphon the day she expired, reads, “Why then are thy garments stained red?”
